canis clicker training reviews, feedback and complaints

Methods in the course have been tested in real life and thousands of dogs and their owners have benefited from them including yours trul :)

It teaches you how to execute clicker training without having to bribe your dog with treats. This means that you would train your dog to do exactly what you want at his or her own accord. Instead of the typical bribe method, ‘do this, do that and you get treats.’ Wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog that behaves like you want him or her to behave without having to give treats all the time?

Training techniques that encourage your dog to think thus effectively enabling him or her to learn new behaviors, tricks and discard bad behaviors in minimal time.

Detailed and straight-to-the point description of the principles and theory behind clicker training. Include precise instructions on how to develop your own trainings skills to further improve your clicker training skills.

Feedback and Complaints

At 216 pages long, the main guide is simply massive. You’ll learn a great deal about conducting clicker training the positive way. Everything from the basics to the advance stuff and they are all written in an easy to understand format with a lot pictures too.

Some of my favorite chapters are:

The 4 Secrets of Becoming a SuperTrainer - The 4 secrets are revealed to you in great detail. 4 secrets? The number is small but trust me, this chapter is a deluxe standout because the trainers, Morten Egtvedt & Cecilie Koeste outlines each “secret” in great detail along with plenty of examples on how to apply the secrets to resolve common behavioral problems effectively.

Positive and Negative Reinforcement - You’ll discover some fascinating ways to analyze a dog behavior just like the pro trainers. According to the site, this chapter will be an eye-opening one.

Sounds cheesy yes, that’s what I thought initially but while reading it, I experienced some“aha” moments so indeed, this chapter is eye-opening.

The 7 Different Teaching Techniques and How to Choose Between Them - When teaching a new behavior, one can pick from a variety of training techniques. Every dog is different so there’s no one size fits all technique to training them.

Fortunately, 7 different training techniques are shared within this chapter along with how pick the right one to address that specific behavior.

Detailed Training Plans for 30 Behaviors - This is where you put to practice all the things you’ve learned form the previous chapters. Morten Egtvedt & Cecilie Koeste claims that “When you have read this book you will be able to make your own training plan for the next 30 behaviors on your own!”

This is true but you really need to read the guide from cover to cover, try to fully understand the teachings and apply each pre-set method outlined in the course bit-by-bit. Only then will you be able to create your own training plan.

At first, I find it difficult to come up with a training plan of my own, but that’s because I kept watching the videos that came with the guide and only read the chapters that interest me :P

Once I took the time to read the guide properly, I managed to fully grasp the principles and lessons presented thus coming up with the correct training plan is no longer as difficult and confusing.

Oh, about the videos that came with the guide. These are really good online videos. Professionally made and they clearly shows you how the trainers trained their dog in real life.

No treats or commanding voices, their dogs performed all the tasks voluntarily thanks to the clicker training techniques outlined by Morten Egtvedt & Cecilie Koeste.

They are 5 online videos in total and they are as follows:

Video 1: Teaching the retrieve.
Video 2: Get the Mail from the mailbox.
Video 3: Teaching Heel Position with a puppy.
Video 4: Getting a soda from the fridge. Side note: can’t get this trick to work just yet, darn! :P
Video 5: Teaching your dog to wrap itself in a blanket.

I Want To Complain

For a manual with top-quality content bundled together with 5 professionally made videos, you’d think that the trainers would get the entire clicker training package presented in tiptop shape? Nope. The cover of the guide needs a major rework. I think the cover looks real cheesy and I was expecting the content to be cheesy as well.

If not for the glowing recommendations from members of a web discussion board that I frequent from time to time, I wouldn’t have bothered getting this clicker trainer course. Yes, I shouldn’t have judge a book by its cover but I’m so peeved that I almost missed out on this one simply because the cover looks cheesy in my eyes.

And another thing, may I repeat the fact that this course is massive? There are only four secrets but the entire guide is chock-full of useful, practical clicker training techniques that take up 216 pages. This is a good thing yes, but it took me 3 days to print out the whole thing! Used a lot of ink so I guess it’s time I change my 4 year old desk jet printer to a low-cost, laser one.

So you're thinking, "what are you complaining about? What has your printer problem got to do with the quality of this course? Okay, okay... I just needed to blow off a little steam because after printing over 200 pages of content, I finally realized that my good ol' desk jet is a bit naff now and has to be replaced.

Users Feedback

"This book is now required reading for all instructors at Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. in California. It offers a very nice balance between clicker theory and practical implementation. The theory is presented in a lively, open-minded and interactive way with well-placed graphics.”

Kathy Kelly, Guide Dogs for the Blind

The format is really easy to follow with nice pictures throughout and a good emphasis on how to proof each behavior. A must for new trainers who want a solid introduction to the method, as well as a good resource for more experienced trainers who either need a shot in the arm to get inspired again about the basics or just to have on hand as a very clear model to pass along to students.

Sarah Owings, Los Angeles CA

“Clickertraining: the four secrets of becoming a supertrainer” is the best starter material we’ve seen. Technical terms and concepts are kept to a minimum and you are given a step-by-step guide to advancing your dog in the fundamentals of obedience in a fun and humourous way. We also learnt lots from the sections on training techniques, backchaining and syndromes (now that was a laugh!!).”
