Purchase 6 different chewing toys.

Give two toys at time and let him mess around with those toys for a few days. Now, take away the toys and provide him another two more toys. Let your dog play with those for a few more days, then take the toys away.

Give him another two different ones and so on. Rotation is the name of the game. Keep his interest level steady and your dog would less likely to chew up your precious belongings.

Temporary Confinement.

Confine your dog in a dog-proofed environment until he fully understands the house rules that you have in place. Once a dog has discovered his favorite chewing material, it’s a bit difficult to sway his attention from that particular object.

Case in my point my dog Bisco. He used to chew on my socks and router cable all the time. These two things became his primary chewing targets because he’s been having at them for quite some time.

Once again, providing the right solution is to supply appropriate chewing alternatives.

However…

Training your dog to chew only appropriate items (like chewing toys) takes time, thus before leaving the house; it’s a good idea to place your dog in a dog-proofed room or crate.

Oh, and be sure to put one or two chewy toys in his crate/room so that your dog would understand what items can be chewed.

This problem can be dealt with a whole lot easier simply by giving your dog adequate mental and physical stimulation.

Remember, the majority of inappropriate chewing cases stem from boredom. So be sure to take your dog for walks regularly and also teach him how to do tricks. Tire him out.

Get your dog to release his hyper excess energy and he’d likely keep his destructive chewing habit in check. This way, you’ll no longer have to wonder about how to keep your dog from chewing up everything.
